The Anaesthetic Crisis Manual (The ACM) is a practical quick-reference e-manual in aviation checklist format, giving step-by-step instructions for the management of the most common anaesthetic crises encountered in the operating room.

60 crisis management and prevention protocols cover the major scenarios requiring immediate therapeutic intervention to prevent a catastrophic outcome. These include life-threatening cardiac, circulatory, airway, respiratory, metabolic and drug induced events.

A crisis prevention section includes diagnostic pathways and checklists for adverse parameter changes, and in this new edition, a machine preparation guide for the unexpected MH susceptible patient.

The new extended crisis support section provides additional information for planning airway management, machine and pre-induction checks, as well as common TEG and ROTEM patterns with suggested treatments, to assist in major haemorrhage. The familiar drug dosages, emergency telephone numbers and abbreviation pages remain.

An exciting new anaesthesia BOLDFACE ACTION is to be found inside the back page. Boldface actions (named because of the bold print in which they are written) refer to specific, critical actions that must be performed immediately and without hesitation during an emergency situation, particularly in aviation, but have now been adapted for healthcare. This Standard Approach to anaesthesia crisis management anchors the treating clinician in immediate action, helping to overcome the common ‘startle effect’ when suddenly confronted with an unexpected crisis.

The manual is once again presented with enhanced colour-coding, bulleted and clearly numbered lists, and protocols grouped according to systems to assist memory recall in cognitively loaded conditions. The interactive features of this eManual features enable quick and easy navigation in the midst of a crisis.

Portable and easily accessible, The ACM provides cognitive support in the midst of an operating room crisis, as well as essential material for simulation training, teaching, drills and crisis management rehearsal.

This updated version of the original and first commercially available crisis management cognitive aid, continues to be a must for the anesthesiologist, trainee, CRNA, peri-operative nurse and operating room.
